| Mary Roberts Critchfield, 89, of Richwood died Jan. 30, 2003, at Richwood Area Community Hospital following a long illness. Born in Elizabeth, City, N.C., on Dec. 21, 1913, Mary was the daughter of the late Harry and Anna Bennett. An educator, she retired in 1974 with 38 years of teaching students at her alma mater, Richwood High School. She earned an AB degree from Marshall and an MA from West Virginia University. Mary was a leader who, while at RHS, sponsored the cheerleaders, started a Pep Club, and was instrumental in the formation of National Honor Society. After retirement, involvement in the community increased and included forming Candy Stripers and serving as the auxiliary presdient at the local hospital. She also served as president of the Rhododendron Garden Club, was a Cherry River Festival Grande Dame and Cherry River Navy Admirlady. She was instrumental in the building of Richwood Public Library and was a longtime member of their Board of Trustees. She was a former member of Eastern Star, White Shrine and Delta Kappa Gamma. She also worked for Beckley Newspapers as Richwood correspondent. She was a member of Richwood Presbyterian Church. |
| G. Forrest Dorsey RICHWOOD - 82, of Richwood, Nicholas County, died March 27, 1999, in Richwood Area Medical Center after a short illness. He was a retired schoolteacher, having taught at Richwood High School, and a former insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance, Richwood. He received a bachelor's degree from West Virginia Tech, and a master's degree from West Virginia University. He was a 70-year member of First United Methodist Church, Richwood, and a member of the Lions Club and the Teachers Association. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. |
| James T. Gwinn James T. Gwinn born on Nov. 24, 1923, at Claypool, W.Va., entered into eternal rest Sept. 12, 2006. After serving proudly in the United States Navy during World War II, he attended Morris Harvey College in Charleston, W.Va., where he received a B.A. degree in English and received his Masters Degree in Educational Administration from West Virginia University. He taught and coached at several schools in West Virginia as well as in Scott and Wise counties in Virginia. He spent the last 22 years at Richwood High School, Richwood, WV retiring in 1986. "T-Bone" as he was known to many of his friends had a variety of interests including carpentry work and farming. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayman Goff and Flora Ellen Gwinn of Meadow Bridge. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Arbutus Gwinn; daughter, Theodora Sue Peters and husband, Bobby, of Dungannon, Va.; sons, J.T. Gwinn, Jr., David Gwinn and wife, Karen, of Dungannon, Va., Ricky Gwinn and wife, Rebecca, of Kingsport, Va.; grandchildren, Lynn Peters and wife, Shanna, Alexis DelPalazzo and husband, John, David Gwinn Jr., Marcus Hopkins, Krista and Kayla Mann. Additional survivors include a sister, Marie Bennett of Malvern, Ohio; brothers, Rev. Roy Gwinn of Alta, Gene Gwinn of St. Albans, Bobby C. Gwinn of Meadow Bridge; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Dungannon First Baptist Church on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Beavers officiating. Memorial services will be held in West Virginia at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dungannon First Baptist Church Youth Group in Dungannon, VA.
