Mary Roberts Critchfield, 89, of Richwood died Jan. 30, 2003, at Richwood Area Community Hospital following a long illness. Born in Elizabeth, City, N.C., on Dec. 21, 1913, Mary was the daughter of the late Harry and Anna Bennett.
An educator, she retired in 1974 with 38 years of teaching students at her alma mater, Richwood High School. She earned an AB degree from Marshall and an MA from West Virginia University.
Mary was a leader who, while at RHS, sponsored the cheerleaders, started a Pep Club, and was instrumental in the formation of National Honor Society.
After retirement, involvement in the community increased and included forming Candy Stripers and serving as the auxiliary presdient at the local hospital. She also served as president of the Rhododendron Garden Club, was a Cherry River Festival Grande Dame and Cherry River Navy Admirlady. She was instrumental in the building of Richwood Public Library and was a longtime member of their Board of Trustees.
She was a former member of Eastern Star, White Shrine and Delta Kappa Gamma. She also worked for Beckley Newspapers as Richwood correspondent. She was a member of Richwood Presbyterian Church.

RICHWOOD - 82, of Richwood, Nicholas County, died March 27, 1999, in Richwood Area Medical Center after a short illness.
He was a retired schoolteacher, having taught at Richwood High School, and a former insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance, Richwood. He received a bachelor's degree from West Virginia Tech, and a master's degree from West Virginia University.
He was a 70-year member of First United Methodist Church, Richwood, and a member of the Lions Club and the Teachers Association. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
James T. Gwinn
James T. Gwinn born on Nov. 24, 1923, at Claypool, W.Va., entered into eternal rest Sept. 12, 2006.
After serving proudly in the United States Navy during World War II, he attended Morris Harvey College in Charleston, W.Va., where he received a B.A. degree in English and received his Masters Degree in Educational Administration from West Virginia University. He taught and coached at several schools in West Virginia as well as in Scott and Wise counties in Virginia. He spent the last 22 years at Richwood High School, Richwood, WV retiring in 1986. "T-Bone" as he was known to many of his friends had a variety of interests including carpentry work and farming. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayman Goff and Flora Ellen Gwinn of Meadow Bridge.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Arbutus Gwinn; daughter, Theodora Sue Peters and husband, Bobby, of Dungannon, Va.; sons, J.T. Gwinn, Jr., David Gwinn and wife, Karen, of Dungannon, Va., Ricky Gwinn and wife, Rebecca, of Kingsport, Va.; grandchildren, Lynn Peters and wife, Shanna, Alexis DelPalazzo and husband, John, David Gwinn Jr., Marcus Hopkins, Krista and Kayla Mann. Additional survivors include a sister, Marie Bennett of Malvern, Ohio; brothers, Rev. Roy Gwinn of Alta, Gene Gwinn of St. Albans, Bobby C. Gwinn of Meadow Bridge; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Dungannon First Baptist Church on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Beavers officiating. Memorial services will be held in West Virginia at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dungannon First Baptist Church Youth Group in Dungannon, VA.

Frances H. Judy, 88, of Richwood died Jan. 13, 2002, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a short illness.
Born Sept. 3, 1913, in Richwood, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Audry Scott Hamilton.
She was a member of Presbyterian Church, Richwood. She was a 1932 graduate of Richwood High School and a graduate of West Virginia University with both a B.S. degree and an M.S. degree in home economics and science. She taught for nine years at Rainelle High School and 29 years at Richwood High School. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, a former member of the Rhododendron Garden Club and the West Virginia Education Association and was southern regional advisor of Future Homemakers of America.
Dorene Morris of Craigsville, W.Va., died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, W.Va., after a long illness.
She was a member of the Birch River Baptist Church, Birch River, W.Va., a retired school teacher from Richwood High School after 35 years, member of county, state, and national teachers' organizations, member of The Whispering Pines Garden Club, Craigsville; member of the Craigsville Senior Citizens Board, on the Indian Rocks Board, Craigsville, member of the Nicholas County Sheltered Workshop Board, Craigsville, graduate of Fairmont State College, Fairmont.
Anna "Mug" Margaret McKenzie Wills, a native and lifelong resident of Richwood, died January 16, 2004 at the age of 85. Born Dec. 6, 1918, she was the daughter of the late James and Minnie McKenzie. She was a lifelong resident of Richwood and a former biology teacher for 37 years at Richwood High School. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Richwood and First United Methodist Church of Richwood.
Lyda Buzzard Deitz - RICHWOOD - 89, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, after a long illness, She was born Feb. 6, 1916, at Saxman, she was the daughter of the late Clinton and Luella Buzzard.. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oakford Deitz.
Mrs. Deitz was a retired English and French teacher from Richwood High School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma educational sorority and Nicholas County Retired School Employees. Teaching and motivating her students were a very important part of her life. Mrs. Deitz graduated from Richwood High School and West Virginia University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English and French. She also did graduate work at Duke University.
Survivors include a son, Stephen Oakford Deitz of Richwood; two daughters, Maria Dooley of Richwood and Cynthia Olson of Seebert; granddaughter, Jourdan Deitz; and five stepgrandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Faith United Methodist Church, Richwood, with Pastor David Cartwright and Pastor Laurie McCormick officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood.
