Woodchopper goes Online

www.Lumberjacknews.com Remember that address because you can now access the Woodchopper online. Journalism II students at RHS are learning how to design and maintain a Web-based newspaper for the first time this year. Newspaper advisor Ms. Susan Johnson explained that the online version of the school newspaper is part of the school's involvement in 21st Century schools. "The Internet is replacing print journalism to some degree, and I decided that RHS students need to get with the 21st Century initiatives to update our use of technology." The class will still produce a print version of the school paper. There are many advantages to producing an online newspaper, according to Mrs. Johnson, "it's exciting for the students. We have all the news, sports, locker snooper, but we can also have color photos, video, blogs and links. The online paper is also much cheaper: "I costs $350 for 1,000 paper copies of the Woodchopper, but the Web version is only be $5 a month." The staff hopes to eventually sell ads on the Web page. School secretary Tammi Brown sees the Web page as positive progress. "For the faculty it is a learning experience. It will provide better communications for the staff and kids." She also says that it is a great way to find out other students and what they have to say. "And the best thing about it is we can read about the success of the students and staff." Students seem to like the idea of an online newspaper. Sophomore Ashley Skaggs said, "I want to see a lot of pictures of my friends, the band, sports and a lot of random stuff." Like many students who grew up in the digital age, Ashley sees the old paper newspaper as somewhat "boring." Rocco Milanese, art teacher at RHS, thinks that it should be updated every week because the kids are probably going to visit the site often. |

Open Letter - October 1, 2007
Dear Alumni: This letter is being sent to remind you it is dues time again. The cost is $25.00 each member. We have had a rather busy year trying to make improvements to the Alumni Hall. We did a lot of painting and cleaning up, thanks to the help of John McClung. Also, John Greer and Richard White volunteered their time to work on the handicap ramp and do the necessary repairs that it needed. Our next project will be securing a floor and replacing the windows as soon as we acquire the necessary funds. This spring we gave four $1,000.00 scholarships to RHS graduating seniors. The recipients were Katie Roach, Gwynne Johnson, Noah Holcomb & Jacob Kidwell. The Comstock Family gave six $1,000.00 scholarships. The recipients were, Joseph B. Tindal, Sierra Ramsey, Carrisa Boyce, Kelly Mullins, Lauren Grubb, and Tiffany Evans. The hall has been rented for several class reunions. Thanks to the Classes of 1956 & 1957 for their nice donation to the Alumni Association. We do appreciate it so very much. We sponsored the boat race again this year during the Cherry River Festival. The winners of the race were, Grace Khuri, $1,000.00, Bill Krafft, $300.00 and W. S. Reynolds, $200.00. All were RHS graduates. We will be helping decorate the streets for Christmas this year. We would like for you to log on to www.richwoodalumni.org or www.richwooders.com the latter has a guestbook to sign. We are always looking for new members. Please ask your friends to help us out by joining. May each of you have happy holidays and a very pleasant 2008? Sincerely yours, RHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Sonya B. Chapman, President |
